The reign of Mary, 1561-67

Mary, Queen of Scots, inherited the throne at infancy, although she spent most of her childhood in France. She was a devout Catholic and also held a claim to the throne of England on the basis that the reigning Elizabeth was born into a marriage that was not recognised by the Pope.

Her return to Scotland at age 18 provoked a great deal of doubt and fear of renewed bloodshed. She was Catholic, she was from France and she had cause to attack England. She was also a widow and would need to choose a new husband to reign with her - possibly a foreigner.
